Most snow removal sites claim a seasonal contract saves money. Run the numbers on this county and it usually does not. That is not an argument against buying one — it is an argument for knowing what you are buying.

NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for Detroit Metro give roughly 13.6 days a season with an inch or more of snow and 4.3 days with three inches or more. A two-inch plowable count sits between them — call it eight to ten events. NOAA publishes no two-inch threshold, so treat that as an interpolation rather than a statistic.

Every seasonal tier on the published card includes walkways. Per visit, they are labor billed by the hour — and on a corner lot with two frontages and the ramps, they are most of the job.
Buy the season if you are north of about Long Lake Road, where the gradient runs toward the 60 to 70 inches the National Weather Service reports near its White Lake Township office; if you are in Troy or Farmington Hills, where the municipal plow does not reach a residential street until four inches; if the driveway is long, a circle, or an estate approach where a per-visit bill compounds quickly; if there is sidewalk frontage, and especially a corner; or if you cannot personally clear it in an emergency.
Per visit can be the better buy if you are in the south of the county where the seasonal totals run lower, you have a short double drive with no sidewalk frontage, you own a working snowblower and use it, and you want coverage only for the two or three storms a winter that genuinely exceed it. Understand that you will be cleared after the seasonal customers, and accept that trade knowingly.
There is a middle option on the published rate card in this market: a higher tier that adds cleanup visits on events below the two-inch trigger and after freezing rain, effectively placing the house on a commercial route. It runs $2,395 against $1,595 for a single or double drive. Freezing rain is the case it is really sold for — half an inch of ice triggers no plow contract anywhere.
