Search what snow removal costs in Troy, in Novi, or in metro Detroit generally, and every result is a national calculator or a directory: Homeyou, HomeGuide, HomeBlue, Manta, ProMatcher. Not one Oakland County contractor ranks for the price of its own market. The county’s most visible residential company sells seasonal contracts online and keeps the rate card behind the purchase flow, which is a reasonable commercial decision and a terrible one for a homeowner trying to budget in October.
So this page collects what is genuinely knowable: one operator’s published residential rate card, the City of Novi’s own bid tabulations from 2024, aggregator figures for per-visit work with their dates attached, and the State of Michigan’s contract structure. Sources are named in the text. Where the market publishes nothing — ice dam removal is the clearest case — this page says so instead of quoting a number from another state.
An Oakland County operator sells seasonal residential contracts online and publishes its 2026–27 prices. Trigger is two inches. Property staking with reflective markers in the first week of November is included, and the season runs to the first day of spring.

Note that single and double driveways are priced identically on this card. The jump is not from one car width to two — it is from a rectangular driveway to a circle, a long approach, or an estate with several areas to clear. Corner lots carry a surcharge on this card and on every other one checked, assessed after review because the extra work is sidewalk, not driveway.
Most contractor sites claim a season price saves money against paying per visit. Run it on Oakland County numbers and that is not what comes out.
NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for Detroit Metro give about 13.6 days a season with an inch or more and 4.3 days with three inches or more. A two-inch plowable count falls between them — call it eight to ten events, and note that NOAA publishes no two-inch threshold, so that is an interpolation rather than a statistic. At $50 to $100 a visit, that is $400 to $1,000 of per-visit billing against a $1,595 seasonal price. The seasonal contract loses that comparison.
Three things. Route priority, because seasonal customers are the route and per-visit work is fitted around it. A fixed cost in a bad winter — seasons at Detroit Metro since 2000 have run from 24.1 inches to 94.9 inches, and no forecast in October tells you which one is coming. And walkways included rather than billed, which on a corner lot is most of the labor.
There is a fourth number worth putting beside the first. A working Oakland County operator’s own sidewalk contract with the City of Novi assumes approximately 15 events annually at a two-inch trigger — higher than the airport-derived count, which is consistent with this county getting more snow than Detroit Metro does. At 15 events, $1,595 works out to about $106 a visit, and the comparison becomes a wash rather than a loss. Which of those two event counts your property actually sees depends in large part on whether you are in Royal Oak or in Oxford.
Ask this before anything about price. In this county the municipal plow reaches subdivision streets last, often hours after a contractor has already cleared the driveway, and it leaves a dense ridge of packed snow across the apron on its way past.
Farmington Hills: “Homeowners are responsible for clearing the windrows formed at the bottom of their driveway.” Troy: property owners “should expect to have windrows of snow encroach” their driveway approaches, and the city lacks “enough hours, staff, money and equipment” to return. Bloomfield Township does not clear snow pushed into driveways either.
So the berm is coming, it is yours, and it is heavier than the snow that fell — plow-packed and often part ice. A seasonal contract can handle it three ways, and they price differently:
The operator comes back after the municipal plow. The most expensive structure and the only one that actually solves the problem. Confirm it covers the apron specifically, not just “the driveway.”
Common, and reasonable if it is disclosed. Ask what the extra visit costs, because at $50 to $100 a time across eight to fifteen events it is not a rounding error.
The default when nobody asks. The driveway is cleared once on the operator’s schedule and whatever the city leaves afterward is a shovel and your own morning.

One seasonal residential figure circulates in the older aggregator data — $500 a season, with commercial accounts from $1,000. That data point is Clinton Township, in Macomb County, from 2016. It is nine years old, it is not this county, and the gap between it and the $1,595 published here today is exactly why it should not be used as an Oakland County benchmark.

Read those rows together and the lesson is not that one contractor is cheap. It is that the 3.4x spread between the low and high seasonal bid does not track the hourly rates at all — the winning bidder was not the cheapest by the hour. Seasonal pricing is a judgment about risk and route density, and two competent operators can land a long way apart on the same property.
Per-push pricing on the same contract ran $650 to $1,500 for a Priority 1 site and $125 to $400 for a Priority 2 site, depending on bidder.

That contract anticipated approximately 15 events annually. The drifting rate is thirteen times the standard rate, which is the clearest published evidence in this market that exposure, not distance, is what makes a sidewalk expensive — worth knowing if your association’s walks run along an open field or a retention basin.
The one Oakland County operator that publishes anything about this work states that commercial contracts start around $15,000 a season, billed monthly from October through March, and that it handles private schools, churches, non-profit organizations and private roads. No local contractor publishes an HOA or private-road rate card. A Bloomfield Hills commercial operator serving associations, estate-scale grounds and gated communities offers two written proposal formats — all-inclusive seasonal, or per-push — with the trigger depth customized per property, and publishes no rates at all.

If a quote you receive is a single flat number with no tiers and no separate de-icing line, that is not necessarily wrong — but it means the operator has priced your risk into an average, and a 94.9-inch season is where you find out whether they guessed well.
No Michigan or Oakland County ice dam contractor publishes rates. Several serve this market and none of them post a number. The only industry figure worth citing is a productivity rule of thumb — a good two-person steam crew clears roughly 10 to 15 feet of ice dam per hour — and even that comes from an operator in another state.
