Snow Removal Across Oakland County

Oakland County is not one snow market. Who plows your street, how deep it has to snow first, what your sidewalk deadline is and how much snow you get all change at municipal boundaries — sometimes by a factor of two.

Work anywhere in the county is carried out by an independent snow removal operator under their own company name and insurance. This site arranges the introduction and clears nothing itself.

The County

Three Jurisdictions and About 5,600 Miles

Every road in Oakland County falls into one of three categories, and a fourth that is not a category at all. MDOT holds 310 miles of state highway — anything with a letter in its name. The Road Commission for Oakland County runs a 2,600-mile county system, the largest in Michigan and second in size only to the state highway system, including more than 750 miles of gravel. Cities and villages hold roughly 2,700 miles, and all of the neighborhood and subdivision streets inside their boundaries.

Townships hold nothing. Michigan townships have no road jurisdiction at all, so RCOC plows every public road in a township — and reaches subdivision streets last, by its own published policy. Bloomfield Township is the single exception, plowing more than 200 miles of its own subdivision roads under a late-1960s Act 51 arrangement funded by a dedicated millage.

And then the fourth thing: private roads, which are in none of those totals and which no public agency plows at any depth. The full jurisdiction picture.

Geography

The North End Gets 20 to 29 More Inches

This is the most useful single fact about winter in Oakland County, and it comes from the National Weather Service’s own station documentation: average seasonal snowfall at Detroit Metropolitan Airport is 41 inches, while average annual snowfall near its Detroit/Pontiac office is 60 to 70 inches — and that office sits in White Lake Township, inside this county, on one of the highest locations in southeast Michigan.

Individual storms run the same gradient. On February 12–13, 2025, forecast totals ran 4 to 6 inches across Farmington Hills, Birmingham, Troy, Royal Oak and Southfield; 5 to 7 inches across Novi, Bloomfield Hills, Clarkston, Commerce Township, Pontiac and Rochester Hills; and 6 to 8 inches at Oxford Township, Lake Orion, Addison Township and Leonard.

A seasonal contract priced against southern-county event counts is underpriced in the north of the county. That is not a sales point; it is the reason a quote from a neighbor twenty miles away is not a comparable.

No published NOAA seasonal normal exists for a Pontiac or Oakland County station specifically, so the 60 to 70 inch figure is cited as the Weather Service’s own description of conditions near its office rather than as a formal normals statistic.
